In addition to the Snapdragon 8 Elite's CPU, GPU, and AI performance improvements, the chipset has been revealed to support 8 years of Android OS updates.
Qualcomm sets industry standards again
Recently at the Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm unveiled its next-generation 3nm-based system-on-a-chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite. The chipset offers 44 percent power efficiency improvements, 40 percent GPU performance improvements, 45 percent in CPU performance improvements, and 45 percent AI performance improvements per watt.
At the event, brands such as ASUS, realme and HONOR presented in support Qualcomm while teasing their upcoming smartphones equipped with the new chipset.
But, that is not all, Christopher Patrick, Qualcomm's SVP and GM announced that the chip supports 8 years of Android OS updates. The brand is paving the way for manufacturers to extend software support. This proves that Qualcomm and smartphone manufacturers can work together to extend software support.
With this initiative, Qualcomm is building the infrastructure and hardware to aid brands in offer longer software support. Majority of devices (non-flagship) are only getting only 2 major OS updates and up to 3 years of security update support. This could make more affordable phones get longer software support in the future.
